Context
Bloom is a two part project inspired by a specimen from the One Nature Lab collection, the Jimson weed seed pod. The first phase focused on close observation and analysis of the natural form, testing our ability to extract meaningful design principles from nature. The second phase required selecting one piece from the desk accessory set and redesigning it for easier manufacturing and replication, simplifying the form as well. Alongside this, we developed a tool that serves as the core mechanism for multiplying and generating the repeated shape.

A desk accessory family translating the Jimson weed seed pod into functional pieces for everyday use. First picture is a pen holder and the other are tape dispensers. Tape dispenser mouth can mechanically extend higher for aestehic or functional reasons. Pens are held through the holes of head.

The Mechanism (jig)

The complexity of the piece lies in its internal structure, requiring the development of a single functional pattern. Below is an exploded view of the three part custom jig designed to support a smooth construction process. The jig separates into three components so that once the acrylic forms around it, the internal pieces can be easily removed from the finished shape.
